Air Purifier Readout

Updated October 24, 2026 by Maren Ostrowski. No lab, no hype: picks built on independent tests and AHAM ratings.

Best Air Purifiers Under $150 That Still Clean the Air

A cheap purifier is a good deal only if it moves real air and its filters don’t cost more than the machine within two years. These picks pass both tests.

  • 141 cfmverified CADR from our top budget pick
  • Filter costthe number that decides whether cheap stays cheap
  • Recall checkthe step that matters most with no-name brands

Short answer

Under $150, get the Levoit Core 300S-P: AHAM-verified at 141 cfm for rooms up to about 220 sq ft, with an app and a lights-off sleep mode. For a dorm, the Honeywell HPA125 costs less and adjusts itself. If you need more raw CADR, the KNKA APH4000 lists 226 cfm verified, but its filters need changing every 3 to 6 months.

What buyers actually worry about

“Do cheap purifiers have expensive filters?”

Often. A filter that lasts three months can cost more over two years than the purifier did. Before you buy, look up the genuine filter’s price and how long it lasts.

9 to 12 months: the Honeywell O filter’s rated life, versus 3 to 6 months for the KNKA’s cartridges.

“Are no-name Amazon purifiers safe?”

Some are, but the risk is real. In February 2026 the CPSC recalled about 191,000 Aroeve purifiers sold on Amazon and other sites for fire risk. Check the CPSC recall list before you buy, and look for ETL or UL listing.

ETL or UL: a safety listing from a testing lab. The Core 300S-P’s listing shows ETL.

“Is a DIY box-fan purifier cheaper?”

Up front, yes: a box fan and a MERV 13 filter cost little and move a lot of air. Consumer Reports tested the build. It is loud and bulky, so most people keep it for smoke emergencies or a garage.

MERV 13: the filter grade CR suggests for the DIY build.

These questions come from Bing searches on this topic and from what testers measure. We summarize; we don’t run our own lab.

How to choose

Check the verified CADR

Look for AHAM Verifide on the listing, then multiply the smoke CADR by 1.55 for the room size.

Price two years of filters

Add the purifier and two years of genuine filters. That total is the real price.

Look up recalls

Search the CPSC recall list for the brand before buying an unfamiliar name.

Consider two small units

HouseFresh suggests that on a budget, two smaller purifiers can beat one bigger one, because their CADRs add up.

Questions, answered short

What is the best air purifier under $100?

Look at the Honeywell HPA125 and the Blueair Mini Restful, the smallest units here. At that budget you are buying for a room of about 110 to 140 sq ft; anything claiming far more deserves a hard look at its CADR.

What is the best air purifier under $200?

Step up to the Winix 5510. HouseFresh reports Winix cut its price to $179.99 after the 5500-2 was discontinued. The Coway 200M is the other mid-range pick.

Is it better to buy two cheap purifiers or one good one?

Often two. CADRs add, so two 141 cfm units give 282 cfm, and you can split them between rooms later.

Why do some cheap purifiers claim 1,000+ sq ft?

They quote the area cleaned once an hour. At AHAM’s 4.8 air changes, divide that figure by about five.

Do cheap purifiers produce ozone?

Filter-only ones don’t. Some add ionizers or UV; models sold in California must be CARB certified for ozone. Avoid anything sold as an ozone generator.

How much does it cost to run an air purifier?

Consumer Reports’ 2026 picks run about $53 to $343 a year for filters and power at 24/7. HouseFresh puts a small Winix at about $51 a year in electricity at top speed around the clock.
