Air Purifier Readout

Updated October 24, 2026 by Maren Ostrowski. No lab, no hype: picks built on independent tests and AHAM ratings.

Best Air Purifiers for Allergies and Asthma

Pollen, dander and dust-mite debris are particles, so a well-sized HEPA purifier running all night does most of the work. These picks are chosen for bedrooms first.

  • 4.8 air changesper hour, AHAM’s room-size target
  • 99.97% at 0.3 micronthe True HEPA benchmark
  • All nightwhen a purifier helps allergies most

Short answer

For most allergy sufferers, put the Coway Mighty2 in the bedroom and run it all night on auto. Its 240 cfm smoke CADR covers about 370 sq ft, so a quiet speed still keeps up in a typical 200 sq ft bedroom. If you avoid ionizers, the Coway 200M is filter-only. Ask your doctor about the rest of your home.

What buyers actually worry about

“Dust mites live in my bed. Will a purifier help?”

Only a little. Mite debris is heavy and settles fast, so it stays in bedding. Zippered mattress and pillow covers and hot washes do more than any purifier.

Bedding first: Consumer Reports’ allergy advice pairs a purifier with mite-proof covers on mattresses and pillows.

“Should I run it 24/7 and keep the windows shut in pollen season?”

On high-pollen days, yes. Close the bedroom windows, let the purifier run all day, and drop to a quieter speed overnight. The EPA notes no air cleaner removes every pollutant, so source control still matters.

EPA: air cleaners work best alongside source control and ventilation, not in place of them.

“Does an “asthma & allergy friendly” label mean it’s better?”

It means the model passed a certification program run with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. That is a useful screen, but CADR and room size still decide whether it works in your room.

Check both: look for the certification mark and an AHAM-verified CADR on the listing. Neither replaces your doctor’s advice.

How to choose

Put the purifier where you sleep

You spend a third of the day in the bedroom, so that is where a purifier pays off. Close the door so it has a fixed amount of air to clean.

Size for a quiet speed

Pick a purifier whose CADR is about 1.5 times what the room needs, so a low, quiet speed still reaches the target overnight.

Choose filter-only if ionizers worry you

Some purifiers add ionizers or UV. Filter-only models avoid the question, and ionizer models sold in California must be CARB certified for ozone.

Treat the bed, not just the air

Mite and pet allergens collect in bedding. Zippered covers and hot washes handle what a purifier can’t reach.

Ask your doctor

A purifier is one piece of an allergy plan. Your doctor can tell you which triggers matter most for you.

Questions, answered short

What is the best air purifier for asthma?

One with a True HEPA filter, no ozone and enough CADR for the bedroom, run all night. The Coway 200M is filter-only. Asthma triggers differ, so ask your doctor before relying on a purifier.

Do air purifiers help with pollen?

Yes. Pollen grains are large and HEPA filters catch them easily. Pollen also rides in on clothes and through windows, so keep bedroom windows closed on high-pollen days.

What is the best air purifier for dust mites?

Purifiers help little with mites because the allergen sits in bedding. Use zippered covers, wash bedding hot, and let a purifier handle what does get airborne.

What is the best air purifier for cat allergies?

Cat dander stays airborne longer than pollen, so a purifier helps more. Pick one sized for the room with HEPA, keep the cat out of the bedroom if you can, and see our pet picks.

How long until I notice a difference?

In a closed room at 4.8 air changes an hour, the air passes through the filter about every 12.5 minutes. Most people notice it at night first, if the purifier runs all night.

Is H13 better than True HEPA?

H13 is a European grade tested a little differently. Both catch allergen-size particles well; CADR and a good seal matter more than which label is on the box.

Can an air purifier make asthma worse?

Ozone generators can, which is why we leave them out. Filter-only purifiers don’t add ozone. If anything in the room has an ionizer, check that it is CARB certified.
