Air Purifier Readout

Updated October 24, 2026 by Maren Ostrowski. No lab, no hype: picks built on independent tests and AHAM ratings.

Best Air Purifiers for Smoke: Wildfire, Cigarette and Cooking

Smoke is two problems: fine particles that HEPA catches, and gases and smell that only carbon touches. Size up for smoke, because you want about five air changes an hour on a speed you can live with.

  • PM2.5smoke particles small enough to reach deep in the lungs
  • 1.5× CADRsize up so a lower speed keeps up
  • 24/7how CR says to run it during smoke events

Short answer

For wildfire smoke in an open plan, get the Coway ProX: 567 cfm and the top performer in Consumer Reports’ extra-large class. For a living room of up to about 400 sq ft, the Levoit Core 600S-P is the value pick. For lingering cigarette or cooking smell, the carbon-heavy Levoit EverestAir-P does more.

What buyers actually worry about

“How big a purifier do I need for wildfire smoke?”

Bigger than for allergies. Aim for about 1.5 times the normal two-thirds rule so you get close to five air changes an hour on a tolerable speed. Consumer Reports found large purifiers, rated for 350 sq ft and up, tend to be better at removing smoke.

Up to 85%: the EPA figure for how much the best HEPA purifiers can cut particle levels, as cited by Consumer Reports.

“What if the power is out or I can’t afford a big purifier?”

A box fan with a MERV 13 furnace filter strapped to it moves a lot of air for little money. It is loud and bulky, but Consumer Reports tested the build and found it helps in a pinch. It still needs power, so plan for a generator or power station in an outage.

MERV 13: the minimum filter rating Consumer Reports suggests for the DIY build.

How to choose

Close up the house first

Shut windows and doors, and seal gaps with weather stripping. Consumer Reports suggests even masking tape if that is all you have.

Make one clean room

If one purifier can’t cover the house, run it in a closed bedroom so everyone has somewhere to sleep in clean air.

Recirculate the HVAC

Set central air to recirculate and use the best filter your system takes, ideally MERV 13.

Watch the numbers

A PM2.5 monitor shows when indoor air recovers, so you know when to turn the purifier down.

Questions, answered short

What is the best air purifier for wildfire smoke?

The Coway ProX for big spaces and the Levoit Core 600S-P for living rooms. Run it around the clock until the smoke clears, as Consumer Reports recommends.

What is the best air purifier for cigarette smoke?

A carbon-heavy unit such as the Levoit EverestAir-P, with HEPA for the particles. No purifier fully removes secondhand smoke; the only complete fix is not smoking indoors.

What about weed smoke?

Same physics as cigarette smoke: particles plus smell. Put a carbon purifier like the Winix 5510 near the source and open a window when you can.

Can a purifier handle cooking smoke?

Turn on a range hood that vents outside first. A purifier with carbon in or near the kitchen catches what escapes.

Should I wear a mask indoors during wildfire smoke?

Indoors, a sealed room with a purifier is the main defense. Consumer Reports recommends an N95 mask if you have to go outside when air quality is bad.

Does an air purifier remove VOCs and smoke gases?

Only the carbon part does, and only partly. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory notes long-term data on gas removal is limited, so heavy carbon like the Austin Air HealthMate Plus is the strongest option here.

How long should I run it after the smoke clears?

Until a PM2.5 monitor shows indoor levels back to normal, then drop to auto. Replace the filter if the indicator came on during the event.
