Air Purifier Readout

Updated October 24, 2026 by Maren Ostrowski. No lab, no hype: picks built on independent test data and real filter prices.

Best Air Purifiers of 2026, Matched to Your Room and What You’re Breathing

Ten air purifiers sorted by what decides whether one works for you: the size of your room, what the filters cost each year, how loud it is on low, and whether it can handle allergies, pets or smoke.

Quick answer

For most rooms, start with the Coway Mighty2, Wirecutter’s 2026 top pick and HouseFresh’s choice for most people, rated for about 370 sq ft. For an open plan or wildfire smoke, the Coway ProX led Consumer Reports’ extra-large class. On a tight budget, the Levoit Core 300S-P is AHAM-verified at 141 cfm.

What buyers actually worry about

These are the questions that decide whether a purifier helps or just hums. Each answer starts with the short version.

“Will it be too loud to sleep with?”

Judge the low setting, not the top one. Most strong purifiers are loud on high, and the good ones still clean on low.

Two speeds: Consumer Reports tests removal at the highest speed and at a lower one, because these run day and night.

“Is “HEPA-type” the same as True HEPA?”

No. True or certified HEPA has to catch 99.97% of particles at 0.3 micron. HEPA-type, HEPA-like and 99% HEPA are not standards, and some brands now quote a percentage instead of saying HEPA at all.

99.97% at 0.3 micron: the HEPA benchmark Consumer Reports describes. Levoit dropped HEPA wording from its Core line in 2023 after Dyson questioned its claims.

“Can it put ozone in my air?”

Filter-only purifiers don’t. Skip anything sold as an ozone generator, including some litter-box deodorizers, and make sure ionizer models are certified for low ozone.

CARB: California requires indoor air cleaners sold there, online sales included, to be certified for ozone emissions.

“Is a cheap no-name purifier from Amazon safe?”

Some are fine, but check the recall list first. Overheating, not weak filtering, is the scary failure.

About 191,000 units: the CPSC recall of Aroeve purifiers sold on Amazon and other sites in February 2026, for fire risk.

“Can a box fan and a furnace filter do the same job?”

In a smoke emergency it helps a lot. It is louder and bulkier than a real purifier, so most people keep it as a backup.

MERV 13 or better: what Consumer Reports used and recommends after testing the DIY box-fan build.

“Can I trust the room size on the box?”

Treat it as a best case. Some brands quote rooms for one or two air changes an hour, which is too slow for allergies or smoke.

CADR × 1.55: AHAM’s room-size math, about 4.8 air changes an hour with 8 ft ceilings. Every room size on this site uses it.

Where these questions come from: the searches people run on Bing for this topic, the things Consumer Reports, RTINGS and HouseFresh measure, guidance from the EPA and the California Air Resources Board, and CPSC recall notices. We summarize; we don’t run our own lab.

Coway launched the Mighty2 in March 2026 as the next generation of the AP-1512HH, the boxy purifier that sat on Wirecutter’s list for about ten years. Wirecutter named the Mighty2 its top pick for 2026, and HouseFresh, which buys every purifier it tests, now calls it the best choice for most people.

The reason to buy it is how it behaves on Smart mode. The laser sensor ramps the fan up when you sear a steak or the dog shakes off, drops into Eco mode once the air is clean, and a light sensor switches it to Sleep mode when the room goes dark. The front panel shows the particle reading as a number, so you can see that auto mode is reacting to something real.

From the listing: AHAM CADR of 240 cfm for smoke, 242 for dust and 249 for pollen, enough for about 372 sq ft at AHAM’s 4.8 air changes an hour. Filtration is a washable pre-filter plus one 2-in-1 HEPA and activated carbon filter (Max2) that Coway rates for up to a year, with a 0 to 100% life readout. It draws 56 W at most and carries a 3-year warranty. Genuine filters run about $49 a year at the Amazon prices we checked. Prices change.

you want one purifier for a bedroom, office or living room up to about 370 sq ft and plan to leave it on auto.

Consumer Reports names the ProX the best performer in its extra-large room class for 2026, and HouseFresh picks it for large spaces after measuring a PM1 CADR of 462 cfm in its own test room. At about 50 pounds it is the heaviest purifier in CR’s roundup, so it rolls on wheels instead of being carried.

There is no app and no remote. You get Smart mode, a particle sensor that reads PM1, PM2.5 and PM10, a turbo setting and a timer. CR estimates about $259 a year for filters and power at 24/7 use, which is what it costs to keep a great room clear through a smoky summer with one machine.

From the listing: AHAM CADR of 567 cfm for smoke, 580 for dust and 450 for pollen, rated for 2,126 sq ft in 30 minutes. It cleans through two filter sets, each with a washable XL pre-filter, activated carbon and HEPA. Coway backs it with a 5-year warranty.

Buy it if

you have an open floor plan over about 650 sq ft, smoky summers where you live, or shedding pets.

Skip it if

you need to carry it upstairs or want app control. Two Levoit Core 600S-P units are easier to move and connect to an app.

HouseFresh tested the 5510 when it replaced the 5500-2 and found it cleared their test room in 24 minutes, with a CADR of about 250 cfm in a compact body. Now that the 5500-2 is discontinued, HouseFresh calls the 5510 the Winix to buy for most people. Consumer Reports lists it in its test program as a large-room model with a 2-year warranty.

The carbon is why it beats cheaper purifiers in a kitchen or a pet room. Winix support told AirPurifierFirst that the 5510 holds the same amount of carbon pellets as the 5500-2. It also has PlasmaWave, Winix’s ionizer, and HouseFresh ran its tests a second time with PlasmaWave switched off for readers who avoid ionizers, so you can run it as a filter-only purifier.

From the listing: AHAM Verifide for 392 sq ft and up to 1,882 sq ft in one hour. A washable fine-mesh pre-filter, an odor-control carbon filter and a True HEPA filter, an auto mode with a light sensor that switches to Sleep mode in the dark, and 23.5 dB on the slowest speed. It is AHAM Verified and UL certified and works with the Winix app.

Buy it if

you cook a lot, have pets, or want a medium-to-large-room purifier with app control at a mid price.

Skip it if

you need a quiet top speed. HouseFresh found the 5510 louder on high than similar purifiers. Run it a notch lower, or move up to the Levoit Core 600S-P so a lower speed still covers the room.

RTINGS made the Core 600S its upper mid-range pick in February 2026, and HouseFresh calls it the best Levoit for large spaces after it cleared their test room of incense smoke in 16 minutes. The listing we link is the 600S-P, the current AHAM-verified version, rated at 391 cfm. The tests above were run on the 600S.

It is built for living rooms, basements and open kitchens up to about 600 sq ft. Levoit’s AirSight Plus sensor drives the auto mode, and the app adds schedules and remote control. For wildfire smoke, size it for a smaller room than that so it can run a speed lower and still keep up.

From the listing: CADR of 391 cfm, 606 sq ft every 12.4 minutes or 2,933 sq ft per hour, 3-stage filtration rated at 99.97% for 0.1 to 0.3 micron particles, an auto mode driven by AirSight Plus, and AHAM Verifide certification. Levoit lists an operating range of 14 to 104°F, which suits a basement or garage gym.

Buy it if

you need real power for a 400 to 600 sq ft room and want app control without paying ProX money.

Skip it if

the word HEPA on the box matters to you. Levoit stopped calling its Core series HEPA in 2023, after Dyson questioned some of its claims, and quotes a filtration percentage instead. The Coway ProX uses a HEPA filter.

RTINGS made the 200M its mid-range pick in February 2026, replacing the Levoit Vital 200S because the Coway performed better overall. Coway says the 200M and the original Mighty have been Wirecutter picks for ten years. It shares the AP-1512HH filter set, so genuine and compatible filters are easy to find.

What you give up next to the Coway Mighty2: the laser sensor with its numeric readout, and the single once-a-year filter. What you keep: an auto mode, an Eco mode that switches the fan off after 30 minutes of clean air, and three manual speeds. For a bedroom or office where you just want it to run, that is plenty.

From the listing: cleans 874 sq ft in 30 minutes or 1,748 sq ft in an hour, which works out to about 364 sq ft at AHAM’s 4.8 air changes. Filtration is a pre-filter, a carbon deodorization filter and HEPA rated at 99.97% for 0.3 micron particles. It carries a 3-year warranty. The genuine filter set’s listing price looked wrong on Oct 24, 2026, so we left it out.

Buy it if

you want Coway’s track record in a medium room and prefer a purifier with no ionizer at all.

Skip it if

you want a numeric particle readout or one filter a year. The Coway Mighty2 has both.

The Core 300 family has been the cheap way to buy real CADR for years. HouseFresh says the Core 300 held the best price-to-CADR ratio on the market for a long stretch, and Smart Air rated the 300S highly on cleaning per dollar, using its Energy Star figure of 141 cfm. The 300S-P we link is the current version, AHAM-verified at the same 141 cfm for smoke.

Smart Air also flagged two things worth knowing. The small sensor behind auto mode does not always react the way you expect, and Levoit dropped the words True HEPA from the 300S in 2023 after Dyson questioned the claim. Neither changes the measured CADR, but if auto mode seems lazy, set a fixed speed.

From the listing: AHAM CADR of 141 cfm for smoke, 156 for dust and 175 for pollen. Sleep mode turns off the display and runs as low as 22 dB. It works with the VeSync app, Alexa and Google Assistant, and is AHAM Verifide, FCC certified and ETL listed.

you need a bedroom or office purifier for up to about 220 sq ft and want app control for little money.

Consumer Reports picks the Honeywell HPA120W for small rooms in its 2026 roundup, a 3-pound tabletop unit for rooms up to 110 sq ft. The HPA125 is the same Allergen Plus tabletop design with Honeywell’s AQSense auto mode added. It takes the same O filter and has the same 110 sq ft AHAM rating. CR’s scores are for the HPA120W, not this exact model.

This is the purifier for a dorm, a nursery shelf or a small guest room. Sleep mode dims the lights and drops to about 21 dB by Honeywell’s measurement. Don’t stretch it to a bigger room: the once-an-hour figure for 530 sq ft on the box is far too slow to help with allergies.

From the listing: AHAM Verifide at 4.8 air changes an hour in 110 sq ft, three cleaning levels, a timer and a filter-change light. The genuine O filter combines a vacuum-cleanable pre-filter, HEPA and activated carbon, and Honeywell says to change it every 9 to 12 months. Genuine filters run about $35 to $47 a year at the Amazon prices we checked. Prices change.

Consumer Reports picks the Mini Restful for small rooms in its 2026 roundup and rates it highly for dust, pollen and smoke at both its highest and lowest settings, which is rare at this size. CR estimates about $53 a year for filters and power, the lowest running cost among its picks.

It doubles as a sunrise alarm clock and a night light, so it earns its place on a nightstand. The light starts brightening 15 to 30 minutes before the alarm, and you can dim the night light or switch it off on the device. Keep it to a bedroom or nursery: Blueair rates it for a 140 sq ft room.

From the listing: HEPASilent filtration that removes 99.97% of airborne particles, a 140 sq ft room cleaned in 12.5 minutes, on-device controls for power, fan speed, light and alarm, and app setup for alarms and schedules. CR members give Blueair excellent predicted reliability and owner satisfaction scores.

HouseFresh calls the EverestAir the best Levoit money can buy and came away impressed by its test results, and TechRadar’s reviewer ranks it among the most effective purifiers they have tested. Both point to the amount of pelleted activated carbon in the filter, which is what handles smells. RTINGS started testing the newer EverestAir-P in September 2026, and that is the version we link.

Levoit says it holds 60% more carbon than the Vital 200S-P. It reads PM1, PM2.5 and PM10 separately, rolls on wheels, and the app can switch it on when air quality drops or off when you leave. The trade-offs are price and size: TechRadar weighed the original at 20.7 lb, so it belongs on a living room floor, not a nightstand.

From the listing: CADR of 354 cfm and up to 2,655 sq ft per hour, a 3-channel laser sensor, smart scenes in the app, and AHAM Verifide certification. Levoit says the genuine filter lasts 12 to 15 months, and the washable pre-filter should be rinsed every 2 to 4 weeks. Genuine filters run about $37 to $46 a year at the Amazon prices we checked. Prices change.

Austin Air purifiers hold far more carbon than a normal consumer purifier. HouseFresh reports about 15 pounds of carbon and zeolite in the standard HealthMate, the most it found across nearly 100 units, and names the HealthMate its pick for odors and VOCs. The HealthMate Plus adds potassium iodide to that blend for chemicals such as formaldehyde.

Particles are not its strength. The standard HealthMate took 52 minutes to clear HouseFresh’s test room, slow next to most picks here, and owners describe the top speed as loud. The case for it is narrow and real: new furniture, renovation smells, heavy smoke odor or chemical sensitivity, where the weight of carbon matters more than speed.

From the listing: 4-stage filtration with activated carbon and zeolite, rated by Austin Air for up to 1,500 sq ft, and up to 5 years of filter life. Retailers list a 5-year warranty on the motor and parts plus a 5-year prorated filter warranty. It weighs about 45 pounds and rolls on casters.

Buy it if

chemical or heavy smoke smells are the problem and you would rather change one filter every few years.

Watch: how purifiers are tested

Watch on YouTube (opens in a new tab)

Testing air purifiers, posted by an independent YouTube channel.

A short news segment on how Consumer Reports tests purifiers: smoke goes into a sealed chamber and testers time how fast the particle count falls. Those removal speeds are the idea behind CADR, the room classes on our cards and the calculator above.

The player loads from YouTube’s privacy-enhanced domain only after you press play. The video is third-party content, not ours, and the models it discusses may differ from our picks.

Buying guide: six things that matter

1. Size it by smoke CADR

CADR is the volume of cleaned air a purifier delivers each minute on high. Use the smoke number, the hardest of the three tests, and aim for at least two-thirds of your floor area. Go higher with tall ceilings or for smoke.

2. Read the filter label

“True HEPA” or “certified HEPA” means 99.97% capture at 0.3 micron. “HEPA-type”, “HEPA-like” and “99% HEPA” are not standards. Some brands, Levoit among them, now quote a percentage instead, so read the number, not the badge.

3. Weigh the carbon

Smells and smoke odor need activated carbon. A thin dusted sheet saturates fast; a filter with loose carbon pellets lasts longer. The Winix 5510 and Levoit EverestAir-P use pellets.

4. Check the low setting

Strong purifiers are loud on high. The question is whether they still clean on low, the speed you will run while you sleep or work. Size up one class if it lives in a bedroom.

5. Price the filters first

Look up the genuine replacement filter and how often it is due, then multiply out three years. That number often flips which purifier is cheaper. A filter rated for 2,500 hours runs out in about three and a half months of 24/7 use.

6. Place it in the open

Give it a foot or two of clearance from walls and furniture, and point the outlet into the room, not at a curtain. One purifier per closed room beats one big unit for the whole house.

Top view of a room: a purifier in the open with clearance is good; one tucked in a corner behind a sofa is bad. SofaBoxed in In the open,1 to 2 ft clear Air needs room to come in and go out.Corners and furniture cut real-world CADR.
Placement matters as much as the spec sheet.

How we chose

We don’t run a test lab, and we won’t pretend to. We build each list from people who do, then add the costs and details they leave out.

  1. Start from independent tests: Consumer Reports’ ratings and room classes, Wirecutter’s picks, and RTINGS and HouseFresh, which buy units and test them in their own rooms.
  2. Size every pick by its AHAM CADR or AHAM room rating against a real room, not the number on the box.
  3. Price the genuine filters from Amazon listings and turn them into a yearly cost. Where CR has a yearly estimate, we use CR’s number instead.
  4. Check safety: CARB ozone certification for anything with an ionizer, and the CPSC recall list for every brand.
  5. Match the listing to the tested model. If the purifier sold on Amazon is a different version from the one a reviewer tested, the card says so.
  6. Throw out bad data. Prices that look glued together, repeat across unrelated models or are too low for a full-size purifier are hidden.
  7. Re-check listings regularly. A pick that goes out of stock or gets recalled is replaced.

A purifier needs at least two independent sources, or hard numbers such as an AHAM-verified CADR, to make the top 10. Models without independent tests can appear on topic pages with a “Not yet independently tested” label.

Filters and gear that make a purifier work better

Consumables first, then the small tools that fix what a purifier can’t. Full list with fit notes on the filters and gear page.

Consumable

Genuine replacement filters

What to look for: the exact model code on your purifier and a seal that matches. Cheap copies often skip the gasket.

Consumable

Carbon pre-filter sheets

What to look for: cut-to-fit sheets for smoke or litter-box smells, swapped about every three months.

Consumable

MERV 13 furnace filters

What to look for: the size printed on your current filter, and MERV 13 if your system can handle the airflow.

Accessory

Air quality monitor

What to look for: a laser PM2.5 sensor. It tells you whether the purifier is keeping up.

Accessory

Hygrometer

What to look for: a humidity readout for damp rooms. Mold needs moisture to grow.

Accessory

Dust-mite bedding covers

What to look for: zippered covers for the mattress and pillows. Mites live in bedding, not in the air.

Companion

Dehumidifier

What to look for: a pint rating that fits the room and a hose outlet for basements.

Companion

Sealed HEPA vacuum

What to look for: a sealed HEPA system. Pet hair on the floor never reaches the purifier.

Air purifier questions, answered short

What is the best air purifier for most people in 2026?

The Coway Mighty2. Wirecutter named it its 2026 top pick and HouseFresh calls it the best choice for most people. It is rated for about 370 sq ft and reads PM1, PM2.5 and PM10. Bigger spaces need the Coway ProX.

What is the best air purifier for allergies and asthma?

One sized for the bedroom that still captures fine particles on a quiet speed, because it will run all night. The Coway Mighty2 or the filter-only Coway 200M fit most bedrooms. Ask your doctor what else should change at home. Allergy picks.

What is the best air purifier for pets?

One with a washable pre-filter for hair and real carbon for odor. The Winix 5510 is the value pick and the Levoit EverestAir-P carries more carbon. Hair on the floor still needs a vacuum. Pet picks.

What is the best air purifier for wildfire or cigarette smoke?

Size for about five air changes an hour and make sure there is activated carbon for the smell. The Coway ProX led Consumer Reports’ extra-large class, and CR suggests running a purifier around the clock during smoke events. Smoke picks.

What is the best air purifier for a bedroom?

For rooms under about 150 sq ft, the Blueair Mini Restful or Honeywell HPA125; up to about 220 sq ft, the Levoit Core 300S-P. Bigger bedrooms need a medium unit such as the Coway Mighty2. Bedroom picks.

What is the best air purifier for a large room or open plan?

The Coway ProX for 650 sq ft and up, or the Levoit Core 600S-P for about 400 to 600 sq ft. Open plans with stairs often do better with two purifiers. Large-room picks.

Do air purifiers actually work?

The good ones do. Consumer Reports says the best remove particles at any speed, while the worst struggle even on high. The EPA notes no air cleaner removes every pollutant, so ventilation and cleaning still count.

How often should I change the filter?

Most combined HEPA and carbon filters last 6 to 12 months; carbon wears out faster in smoky or smelly homes. The Mighty2 filter is rated for up to a year, the EverestAir-P for 12 to 15 months, and Medify’s for about 2,500 hours.

Where should I put an air purifier?

In the open, a foot or two from walls, in the room where you spend the most time. For sleep, put it in the bedroom with the outlet pointed into the room. See the placement diagram.

I have central air. Do I still need a purifier?

Start with a MERV 13 furnace filter if your system can take it. A room purifier still helps in bedrooms, because the HVAC fan doesn’t run all the time.

What does CADR mean?

Clean air delivery rate: how many cubic feet of filtered air a purifier delivers per minute on high, measured for smoke, dust and pollen under AHAM’s standard. Multiply the smoke number by 1.55 to get the room size it handles. Size calculator.

Are Levoit air purifiers HEPA?

Levoit quotes 99.97% filtration for 0.1 to 0.3 micron particles, but it stopped using the word HEPA for its Core series in 2023 after Dyson questioned some claims. The measured CADR is what matters, and the Core models’ numbers are AHAM-verified.

What do people on Reddit recommend?

Reddit threads are useful for long-term owner reports, such as sensor drift or a fan that starts to rattle. We read them for patterns but don’t copy posts, and every pick here also has a professional test or AHAM data behind it.

Do these picks work in the UK, Canada or Australia?

Canada uses the same 120V power as the US. UK and Australian homes use 230 to 240V, so buy a model made for your country rather than a US listing.

How do your picks compare with Consumer Reports and Wirecutter?

Wirecutter’s 2026 top pick, the Mighty2, is our number one, and CR’s extra-large pick, the ProX, is our number two. We use CR’s room classes and cost estimates where it tested a model and say so on each card. We don’t reproduce member-only scores.

The verdict

Whatever you pick, size it with the calculator, price the filters before you buy, and leave it running.
